URBANIZATION to make an area of countryside or a village into a town or part of one to make somebody who lives in the countryside migrate to a town or city industrialization to adapt a country or group to industrial methods of production and manufacturing, including all the social changes

Population changes, growth of cities, and new inventions often produced conflict between different cultural groups. This presented problems in urban areas.

Reasons for the increase in immigration • Hope for better opportunities • Desire for religious freedom • Escape from oppressive governments • Desire for adventure

One of the challenges that came from increased immigration was Discrimination against immigrants • Chinese • Irish (*Negative results that come from something happening are sometimes called “BACKLASH”)

Efforts to solve immigration problems • Settlement houses were set up by private citizens Hull House founded by Jane Addams (Chicago) • Political machines were local political parties that gained power by helping new immigrants with jobs, housing, etc.
