Interpreting Graphs
2
Steps to correctly interpreting graphs
Identify what is the independent variable on the x-axis. What units are being used?
3
2. Identify what is the dependent variable on the y-axis
2. Identify what is the dependent variable on the y-axis. What units are being used?
4
3. Do you know of any mathematical relationship between those to variables? If so, the slope of the line EQUALS that mathematical relationship. Density = mass/volume
5
4. If there is no change to the slope of the line, then the relationship is constant.
The volume and the mass are increasing at the same rate so the density is constant and not changing. * Note that the volume and the mass ARE changing!
6
5. If there is no slope to the line, then the y-axis variable is unchanging.
So in this graph the slope is ZERO so there is no speed. The distance is constant and unchanging Meaning that the object is NOT moving.
7
6. If the angle of the line is changing, then the slope of the line is changing and therefore the relationship between the two variables is changing. Notice that the time and the distance are not changing at the same rate. The curve in the line indicates the change is NOT constant.
