CREATING LEARNING BY CREATING IMAGES
Authors: Mahak Rathee Nishit Shah

How it all started?

The authors started a social awareness campaign way back in their second year of law school and titled the campaign as “Breaking Stereotypes”, aim of which was to make people pause and ponder over little acts of discrimination that happen in day today’s life. The forthcoming images and pictures will make you people acquainted with the scheme of the Breaking Stereotypes.

Isn’t it highly paradoxical that on one hand, we are demanding egalitarianism while on the other, are indulging in petty acts of discrimination based on very sensitive issues as in a person’s skin color, gender etc. ?

#STOPSTEREOTYPING Judging people and treating them unfairly by attaching stereotypical limitations to their identity is something that most of us consciously or unconsciously do. Its not a baseless allegation. A minute of self-interrogation will be all it will take to prove the truth of the fact. THIS IS EXACTLY THE PURPOSE “BREAKING STEREOTYPES” SERVES…
13
Images V/s. Text The campaign, “Breaking Stereotypes” gathered much more attention as compared to the well drafted articles, which led us to conduct a further research as to why these images got so much attention and the articles/ blogs went unread.
15
Seeing is Believing Neuroscientists research has revealed the importance of imagery within our thoughts and actions. [David P. Mccabe, Alan D. Castel, The effect of brain images on judgments of Scientific reasoning, Cognition, 2008, Vol , ] Findings: It is proved that 65% of the human population is visual learners. That’s two out of every three people you will communicate with think using pictures.

“POVERTY” What comes to your mind after reading this word.. An image or a thought?
17
This is what the mind visualizes…

Or this…

Advantages of Visual Learning
Gets the attention of the participants Easy to follow Puts things in perspective Easier to explain as well as easier to remember Helps in keeping mistakes at a minimum
20
Thinkers need to think to see…
The effective use of visuals can decrease learning time, improve comprehension, enhance retrieval and increase retention. [McDaniel, M.A., and Einstein, G. O. (1986). Bizarre Images as an effective Memory Aid; The importance of Distinctiveness. 12 (1), 54-65]

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

#CreatinglearningbyCreatingimages
Majority of the students are either visual learners, or have been directed towards adopting a visual learning style due to their exposure to a plethora of visual stimuli in their everyday life. Therefore, being highly motivational and a very effective tool of learning for both students and teachers, visual tools, however, simple they might be, their significance should not be forgotten. [Petra Krcelic & Ana Skledar Matijavic, A Picture and a thousand words: Visual Tools in ELT, 2015]

CONCLUSION Traditional Lecture methods of learning and teaching should be replaced by novel methods, which are based on pragmatic approach i.e. Field visits, visual learning, and interactive sessions. Learning can also be enhanced by using additional flowcharts, diagrams, pictures and short films etc.
