Like Pip, Charles Dickens came from a humble background and had ambition (expectation) for his life.
Much of the story’s background (marshland, legal profession) Dickens knew first-hand
GE is a ‘coming-of-age’ story, or bildungsroman, where the protagonist matures as a result of his experiences
