3 Literature Circle In your group, share the notes you took for the 1st part of Great Expectations (Ch. 7-12) Listen to others’ contributions & feel free to add ideas of your own Add these predictions to your discussion: What do you think will happen between Pip & Estella? What will become of Joe now that his wife is dead?

4 Charles Dickens & Great Expecations
Like Pip, Charles Dickens came from a humble background and had ambition (expectation) for his life. Much of the story’s background (marshland, legal profession) Dickens knew first-hand GE is a ‘coming-of-age’ story, or bildungsroman, where the protagonist matures as a result of his experiences What other bildungsroman stories do you know? Some famous bildungsroman: Harry Potter – Harry, Hermione, Ron The Catcher in the Rye – Holden Caufield To Kill a Mockingbird - Scout Tom Sawyer - Tom Anne of Green Gables - Anne

Until now, we have used the following roles in our Lit Circle discussions: Summarizer Word Master Discussion Director Connector Culture Collector Cartographer Here is the new role we’ll add: CHARACTER CURATOR The job of the Character Curator is to Take note of new characters as they appear (or reappear) Log important info about them and their role Note the relationships & connections between characters in the story

After watching, discuss with your partner the difference in the portrayal of Miss Havisham / Miss Dinsmoor Clip 6 How is Joe portrayed at the gallery opening (Pip / Finn is an artist in this story)? Is it what you imagined of Joe? Why does one character suggest Joe is a drug smuggler? Clip 7
