2 What is Baroque? The Baroque is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, grandeur in architecture.

3 What is the Baroque architecture?
Baroque architecture is the building style of the Baroque era, begun in late 16th-century Italy, that took the Roman vocabulary of Renaissance architecture and used it in a new rhetorical and theatrical fashion, often to express the triumph of the Catholic Church and the absolutist state.

4 The style manifested itself in particular in the contest of the new religious orders.

6 When did the Baroque style appeared?
The architecture of the High Roman Baroque can be assigned to the papal reigns of Urban VIII, Innocent X and Alexander VII, spanning from 1623 to 1667.

7 Firstly the style emerged in Italy from Renaissance architecture.
English Baroque evolved after the Great Fire in London in 1666 when Christopher Wren used it to rebuild the city. France led Late Baroque and Rococo. Spain adopted Baroque architecture in the late 16th century.

8 French Baroque architecture.
The centre of Baroque secular architecture was France, where the open three-wing layout of the palace established as the canonical solution as early as the 16th century.

10 Architectural styles. Twisted columns, sometimes simply decorative instead of supportive. More curves instead of straight lines. Highly decorative details and ornaments. Towers of domes. An abundance of windows. Broad naves. Ceiling frescoes. Blending of paintings and architecture.

12 Bernardo Vittone. One of the most important active Baroque architects in Italy. Designed Paris Church of Gragnasco, Borgomasino,  the Ospizio or Albergo di Carita at Carignano, the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Alba.

14 Sir Christopher Wren. Rebuilt 32 churches in London after the fire.
Rebuilt St. Paul’s Cathedral Began to work with Baroque after a trip to Paris and observing the French styles of Baroque.

16 Jules Hardouin. Served as Louis XIV's chief architect.
Designed all the extensions and rebuildings at Versailles for the King. Among his best-known works, in Paris, are the Pont-Royal, the Église Saint-Roch de Paris, the Place des Victories.
