Essential Question: Explain the basic differences among the following printing processes: relief printing, planography, intaglio process, porous printing, and impactless printing. BELLWORK: In the textbook Reading for Information turn to page 12 and read through page 14. After reading identify ways using the K-W-L strategy will help you in this class and your other classes. Think – Pair- Share: Think about what you wrote, pair with a partner and share your answers. Be ready to share with the class. Key Terms I will be able to explain the importance of communication in our technological society Graphic communications: The exchange of information in a visual form, such as words, drawings, photographs, or a combination Substrate: Any material with a surface that can be printed on Artwork: The graphic elements used in producing printed products (line art and photographs) Line art: Illustrated images drawn by hand or using computer software Editing: the final preparation of the author’s manuscript for publication, including checking the text, line art, and photographs Process color: The four colors of ink used for color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Also known as CMYK Printing: A process involving the use of a specialized machine to transfer an image from an image carrier to a substrate. Printing press: A specialized machine used to transfer an image from an image carrier to substrate, usually paper. Impactless printing: the term used for several types of printing that DO NOT require direct contact between an image carrier and the substrate.

Key Terms I will be able to explain the importance of communication in our technological society Commercial printing: A segment of the graphic communications industry that produces various products for customers, including forms, newspaper inserts, and catalogs. Quick Printing: A subdivision of commercial printing, consisting of shops specializing in rapidly completing short-run printing and photocopying work for customers. Relief Printing: the oldest method of printing, and requires a raised image. Ink is spread on the raised image areas, and transferred to paper by direct pressure.
