Slope Between 2 Points King/Halling Algebra
2
TOPIC: Slope Between 2 Points
AIM How do we calculate the slope of a line when given two points that it passes through? TOPIC: Slope Between 2 Points
3
DO NOW Plot the following points and determine the rate of change from either the graph or the table. X Y -4 6 -1 4 2 5
4
Slope and Rate of Change
Brainstorm formulas you already know for slope: The algebraic formula for slope is: SLOPE = y2 – y1_ x2 – x1
5
How to use this given two points…
Write the formula for slope: Calculate the slope of the line passing through the points (1,4) and (3,7)
6
You try these. Find the slope using the formula: m = y2-y1
x2-x1 (5, 6) and (8, 4) (9, -2) and (5, -7)
7
Activity - Graph the Lines:
example: y = 4x + 2 hit y = graph Plug the following linear equations into your calculator and graph them separately. Sketch the picture of the graph for each on your graph paper.
8
Activity Summary What do you notice about all of the lines in examples 1-3? _______________________________________ What do you notice about all of the lines in examples 4-6? What do you notice about all of the lines in examples 7-9? __________________________________________
9
Exit Ticket -4 Pts Calculate the slope of the line passing through the points (0,-3) and (4, 9) -2 Is the slope of this line positive or negative? -1 What does this mean about the graph of this line? (How would it look?) -1
