SPARK Future Engineers
December 8th, 2017 Lesson Objective: Students will be able to design a bridge for a 3D printed bridge competition Do Now: What parts on a bridge makes it a strong structure? Explain in your own words in 2-3 sentences.
2
Types of Bridges Arch bridges Beam bridges Truss bridges
Cantilever bridges Tied arch bridges Suspension bridges Cable-stayed bridges
3
Arch bridge Uses an arch as a main structural component
Made with one or more hinges depending on what kind of load or stress forces they must endure. Pictured on the left is the Hell Gate Bridge in NY
4
Beam bridge Very basic type of bridge Inclined or V shaped
Pictured on the right Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in southern Louisiana
5
Truss Bridges Diagonal mesh design
Two common designs are the king posts (two diagonal posts supported by single vertical posts and queen posts (two diagonal posts, two vertical posts that connect two vertical posts at the top. Pictured on the right is a example of a queen Truss bridge in Cache County, Utah.
6
Cantilever bridge Similar to appearance to arch bridges
Support their load not trough vertical bracing but through diagonal bracing. Pictured on the right is the Queensboro Bridge in NYC.
7
Tied arch bridge Similar to arch bridges
Transfer weight of the bridge and load to the top chord that is connected to the bottom cords in the bridge foundation Pictured on the right is the Fremont Bridge in Portland, Oregon
8
Suspension Bridges Bridges that use ropes or cables from the vertical suspend or to hold the weight of bridge deck and traffic. Pictured on the right is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.
9
Cable-stayed Bridges Bridges that uses deck cables that are directly connected to one or more vertical columns Pictured on the right is the Abdoun Bridge, Amman, Jordan
10
Class Activity You and 3 other group members will design 3 bridges using the concepts of the bridges learned in this lesson. You will decide after 3 designs, which bridge you would like to design for the 3D printed bridge competition. Be sure to make your bridges at least 12 inches long, and to have support like many of the bridges in this lesson. Complete the design on the worksheet provided to you.
