1 IND 2410 Industrial Design II
Project Name: Culinary Display Design Instructor and Course Coordinator: Prof. Masato R. Nakamura Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology New York City College of Technology (City Tech), City University of New York (CUNY), Brooklyn, NY Plate Blossom Introduction The main aim of this project is to create a food display item that can be used in a culinary competition. Solution: The Plate Blossom 1 single plate that has petals attached to a blooming mechanism. Display a single main dish, like the one in figure 1. Flower-shaped Manual mechanism Eye-catching colors Figure 1. Lobster Creole Anita Keo Spring 2016 Prof. Masato R. Nakamura IND 2410 | Industrial Design II Closed Blossom Opening & Closing When closed: The height from the based to the tip of the petal is in. The height from the plate to the tip of the petal is 9.17 in. Octagonal-base has a width of 7.27 in. Closed petals form a small opening at the top that will allow smell and steam to escape. The levers of the turning mechanism are at the bottom of the white stem/base of the blossom. The petals have to be manually opened Petals are divided into 2 sets of 4, each open to different level. Open Blossom Assembly When opened: The diameter of the plate is 13 in. The turning mechanism (under the plate) are connected to the petals by thin metallic rods. The max width of the opened petals, measured from tip-to-tip is 22.96in. The design is still in its first prototype stage; currently, its components can be divided into 6 main parts: 8 X Petals - Thermoplastic Petals Joint - Aluminum Tray – Clear Polycarbonate Axle Wheel – Thermoplastic 8 X Rods – Thermoplastic Base - Steel Future Improvements Motors can included, so that the blooming mechanism can be remotely controlled. Sensors can be added that the plate can autonomously bloom when a person is nearby. Most of the parts, specifically those that are thermoplastic, can be 3D printed, The plate/tray is made of polycarbonate because it’s a light plastic with excellent heat and scratch resistance, and a high tensile and impact strength.
