Warm-up 10.31.17 I was scared of the clown. The weather was bad.
Show DON’T Tell Rewrite the sentences to show the action, feeling or event happening. Example: Telling sentence: I was really mad. Showing sentence: I ran to the door, threw it open with a loud bang against the wall, and yelled, “Get in this house right this minute! You are three hours late!” You try: I was scared of the clown. The weather was bad. The house was haunted. It was very dark inside.

Showing sentence: I held my hand in front of my eyes but couldn’t see its outline. The walls were invisible and it was impossible to see the bottom of the steep stairs. Showing sentence: The old house stood eerily abandoned on the hill, scaring everyone in the neighborhood with creaking, breathing noises. Showing sentence: A harsh wind whipped through the trees. Dark clouds poured buckets of rain that overran the gutters and spilled onto the sidewalks.

Look at tone and mood. Highlight words that set the tone or mood Look for the theme- Underline the words “Mad” or “madness” every time you see it. Look at the characters. Mark places you learn about them. What kind of person are they? How are they described physically? What is their emotional state?

Have out your Poe story and short response questions!
Read the following imaginary situation and respond to the prompt: Your younger sibling has been given a writing assignment by his teacher. He asks you to read over his short story. You read it but it is SO boring! You realize he has no imagery or sensory details. In your notebook write a paragraph explaining to him why he needs sensory details and give him an example of “telling” sentence turned into a “showing” sentence. Have out your Poe story and short response questions!
