2 SPEECHES WHICH USE LOGOS (and Ethos )
Starter: List as many reasons/examples that you can think of as to why a speaker might want to convince someone of their opinion. Example:- A parent reassuring their nervous child that they will be safe in their first swimming lesson. How many examples can you think of? LO: to understand how LOGOS and ETHOS can be combined to create a powerful speech; to understand other key persuasive techniques.

3 Tim Collin’s Speech Why do we go to war?

4 Colonel Tim Collins' speech to around 800 men of the battle group of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, part of the 16 Air Assault Brigade given at their Fort Blair Mayne camp in the Kuwaiti desert about 20 miles from the Iraqi border on Wednesday 19th March 2003. Can you think what type of arguments and reasons for going into battle he might have given in his speech?

5 Does he think carefully about who he is speaking to?
Who is his target audience? Do they know each other? Why are they there (choice)? How much do they already know about the topic? What do they need/want to know by the end? Why does he need to win his audience over?

6 Watch the clip from a film about Tim Collins

7 Technique: Antithesis
There are thousands of words that have opposites and these provide opportunities for effective contrasts. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” (Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities) Technique: Chiasmus Technique: Anaphora Another extremely effective tool in making a point memorable is the mirroring of words of the first half of a sentence in the second half. “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something” (Plato) This widely used technique is simple and yet extremely efficient. Individual words or whole phrases are repeated at the beginning or end of a phrase making that phrase both memorable and rhythmical. “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender” (Winston Churchill)

8 Look at the opening of the speech- which techniques can you identify?
We go to liberate, not to conquer. We will not fly our flags in their country We are entering Iraq to free a people and the only flag which will be flown in that ancient land is their own. Show respect for them. There are some who are alive at this moment who will not be alive shortly. Those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send. As for the others, I expect you to rock their world. Where is his use of LOGOS evident?

9 Complete the analysis of the speech

10 Was the speech successful? Why?
What did the speech use? Logos? Pathos? Ethos? A mixture? Why was it successful? How did the audience feel? Are there any ways you could improve the speech? How? What top three tips can you take from this speech?
