Florence is centrally located in the region of Tuscany in northern Italy. It is situated on both sides of the Arno River, surrounded by the foothills of the Apennine Mountains. Florence was where the Renaissance achievements in art, architecture, and science were born.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Holy Mary of the Flowers) was started in 1294 and was finished in 1446, when Filippo Brunelleschi built the dome. The people wanted a cathedral that was so beautiful that God would look with favor on the city and help them with what they needed.

3. Act. 1.4 Walking Tour of Florence
Across the city from the cathedral was the city hall, called the Palazzo del Popolo, or the Palace of the People. This was the civic center of Renaissance Florence, just as the Duomo was the religious center. The Palazzo was the seat of the government of the Florentine Republic.
