Users 9 users - 6 male and 3 female
Age group - 18 to 35 (young adults) Have prior experience in social networking and video conferencing Students and professionals recruited through contacts

Data Aggregation
6
Reflection on methodology
Post-test questionnaire - results are unreliable Think aloud - hesitation Pre-questionnaire - only honest answers
7
User behavior To find a function / feature, users would randomly click all over the place “I would start clicking on random buttons until one of them told me this information.” Confirmed observation that UI is not discoverable
8
Learnability vs. long-term usability
Product aimed at long-term usability, not aimed at new users, might accept learnability issues But Google+ changes features and interface all the time
9
Stream
10
Stream: Post order Users expected most recent post to be at top (reverse chronological order); in fact, there is no discernible strict order “In order to figure out what was the most recent post, I'd have to look at all of them” Multi-column layout makes it even less clear Not clear how to change layout
11
Stream: Changing layout
12
Stream: Notifications
Notifications appear in multiple places: … often with substantial lag, up to several minutes
13
The +1 button “... this +1 button, I assume that's the 'like'... largely because of Google's media advertising.”
14
Hangouts
15
Hangouts For the most part, our group inspection of Hangouts revealed the same types of higher severity issues that users identified
16
Hangouts Text Chat Asked users if they expect a prompt before entering video chat. Several users responded that they would expect a prompt/ warning before entering video call. Once clicked video call begins without warning. User Comment: “Yes, I would expect a prompt before the video mode comes up”
17
Video Chat (Before and After)
Hangouts video call layout and look changed from the time we did our team evaluation to the time we conducted our user tests. Did not ultimately affect the tasks we were testing
18
Video Chat (Mute/ Unmute)
Asked users to locate mute button for both themselves and others that they are in the hangout with. Users had difficulty identifying which mute button controls each person.
19
Video Chat (cannot unmute others)
Users thought that when they clicked on the mute button again, that they had unmuted the person they had originally muted without questioning it. In reality the other participant in video chat was still muted.
20
No Labels (Plug and Play)
Interesting user finding: A couple of our users thought that the signal strength button was actually volume control. As with other parts of Google+, nothing is labelled and users tend to click around for a great amount of time trying to figure everything out. Many users had a confused facial expression while doing this.
