Praying Like Jesus

Mark 11: As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart,

but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

The prophets frequently spoke of the fig tree in referring to Israel’s status before, while the destruction of the fig tree is associated with judgment. In this context the fig tree symbolizes Israel in Jesus’ day, and what happens to the tree the terrible fate that inevitably awaited Jerusalem. – William Lane

Have faith in God.

Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

Zechariah 4: Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’”

Mark 11: On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Mark 14: And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
1 John 5: And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. John 15: If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

At the end of yourself, you can pour out your heart to Him, you can storm heaven but always with this qualifying statement, “Nevertheless, not my will, but Yours be done.” Why? His will is greater, purer, wiser, more generous, more gracious, more merciful than anything you can ever imagine. - John MacArthur
