Phonics Follow the letters and Sounds programme which starts in Nursery with listening to different sounds…………… Learning to recognise and write the different sound Learn the name of the letter but it is important to say the sound of the letter- not the name when sounding out eg c_a_t Refer to your Foundation Reading Pack for examples of how each sound should be taught Handwriting We use the Letterjoin scheme which has a website. Each letter starts with a lead in. This prepares the children for joined up writing. Refer to pack for log-in and practise examples. First steps: E. Y. F. S.

Why ? Why not ? What was your favourite part ? Why ? Which part was funny? sad ? scarey? How did the characters feel ? What might have happened if ………….? Can you think of a different ending ? Were there any interesting words ? WOW words ! Ask why questions

Reading at school By the end of Year 2 Working towards the expected standard: I can read accurately by blending the sounds that contain the common graphemes for 40+ phonemes I can read accurately some words of two or more syllables that contain the same GPC I can read many common exception words I can read aloud many words quickly and accurately without overt sounding and blending I can sound out many unfamiliar words accurately I can answer questions and make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done in a familiar book that is read to me Working at the expected standard: I can read accurately most words of two or more syllables I can read most words containing common suffixes I can read most common exception words I can read words accurately and fluently without overt sounding and blending ie at over 90 words per minute I can check that what I have read makes sense I can answer questions and make some inferences on the basis of what is being said and done Working at greater depth : I can make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done I can predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far I can make links between the book I am reading and other books I have read
