1 THE OIL SEA HARVESTER SYSTEM :
AN INTEGRATED CONCEPT OF TOOLS ON A DEDICATED AND ADAPTED PLATFORM

2 THE SITUATION Large oil spills at sea difficulty to act rapidely
difficulty to operate in a rough sea

3 THE NEED A vessel capable to harvest oil at sea in quite harsh conditions A vessel that can be on site quite rapidely A multi-purpose vessel worth to be maintain at sea all year long

4 AN INNOVATIVE ANSWER : THE PLATFORM
A TRIMARAN STRUCTURE Central hull : slender monohull Side hulls : swath type ADVANTAGES Monohull Course stability Reduced pitch motion High payload Swath Roll stability

5 OSH PLATFORM : FIRST CONCEPT

6 OSH platform : Preliminary design within European funded project
Some preliminary work at the beginning of the project based on updated specification for the vessel (WP2) allowed to : adapt the general dimensions of the ship to the project (displacement, storage capacities, …) eliminate some drawbacks of the original conceptual design facilitate the integration of the tool carriage and of the oil recovery tools improve the general performances : nautical qualities of the platform, efficiency of the oil recovery tools in rough weather

7 OSH platform : Preliminary design
Major modifications were : lengthened main hull Side hull : round section fitted outside the channel for easier tool carriage integration Total displacement : increased to tons, according to the updated weight evaluation. Transverse stability: GM increase from 1 m to 2 m, according to stability rules requirements Move accommodations forward in order to have more room on the aft part dedicated also to complementary missions

8 OSH platform : modifications

9 OSH PLATFORM : MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

11 THE HARVESTING CONCEPT
AN INNOVATIVE ANSWER : THE HARVESTING CONCEPT The oil slick penetrates into the two chanels between the two sides and the central hull These chanels are well protected from the external rough weather The surface of the oil slick is calmed by : the narrowness of the chanels The oil viscosity The residual mono directional sea state into the chanels is reduced In that choppy sea it becomes possible to recover the oil slick with the proper tools fitted on two floatable tool carriages

12 TOOL CARRIAGE

13 OIL SLICK RECOVERY TOOLS
These tools may be fitted according to the product viscosity They are modular built types They are fitted on the two floatable carriages They are stored on board They are chosen to match with the specific need

14 TOOL CARRIAGE AND A TOOL

15 COMPLEMENTARY MISSIONS
Such a vessel would be able to carry out the following missions : The permanent presence at sea 350 d/y Search and rescue Maritime surveillance Solid waste recovery Chemical products recovery Fire fighting Offshore operations which require a dynamical positioning by high sea state 6/7 : Pumping from wrecks Exploitation of submarines and robots Etc

16 CONCLUSION This concept of platform and associated tools dedicated to oil recovery but also complementary missions is to allow to : Operate even in high sea state Give assistance to ships in distress Arrive very quickly on the catastrophe spot Recover efficiently the oil slicks by using the more efficient tool And so decrease drastically the consequences of the oil slicks
