From Cleaner Production to Sustainable Industrial Resource Management (SIRM) UNIDO’s Interventions

2 A I M S UNIDO’s NEW FOCUS: SIRM Reduction in the amount of material and energy used, by increasing the efficiency throughout the entire production process and eliminating and substituting hazardous and toxic substances; Implementation of circular material and energy flows in the entire production chain.

3 M E A N S UNIDO’s NEW FOCUS: SIRM Separation of the material flows in two: technical flow (including non biodegradable materials) and nutrients flow (with organic and biodegradable materials) to facilitate internal recycling and reuse; Changes in the relation between manufacturer and user, where manufacturers shift from selling products to supplying services; Substitution of non-renewable energy sources by renewable ones.

4 I N T E R V O UNIDO’s NEW FOCUS: Operating at the entire supply chain level including all stakeholders and expanding from the company focus to addressing relevant issues for providers, suppliers and final products receivers; Including economic, financial, political and social aspects; Global Forum Activities and Technical Cooperation work of UNIDO.

3 % of Regional GDP; 522,033,000 m3 wastewater annually discharged to water bodies; employees; Milk production in 2003: 2,3 million tons; Annual growth of milk production: 4.7%

Whey based Fruit Drink – Environmental, Economic and Social Benefits Reduction of 60,000 m3 of wastewater per year (equivalent to the BOD of 2 million people); Avoidance of wastewater treatment costs of approx. 1 USD per 1000 liters; Sales of new product generates incomes of approximately 60 USD per 1000 liters; Employment generation; High nutrition drink at low price distributed in schools in rural areas.

8 S I R M CHEMICAL LEASING UNIDO Cooperation with the Austrian Ministry of Environment and the NCPCs in Egypt, Mexico and St.Petersburg to promote the application of Chemical Leasing business models. Chemical Leasing is a shift from product to service focus, e.g. reprocessing of solvents Promotes a close cooperation between producer and user of chemicals EU Chemical Policy REACH: Extended Producer Responsibility.
