Short Reports: The most frequent type of writing done by:
Technologists Engineers Technicians Business writers Research scientists Purpose: to provide information and analysis so that readers can be informed and make good decisions Report Formats: Correspondence (letter, , or memo of 1 – 3 pages) Semi-formal (of 4 – 10 pages)

Progress Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp. 433-444)
Kinds of Reports: Progress Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) Shows the status of a project. Is it in schedule? Does it need corrections? What work is next? Purpose may be to: Give a summary of work completed Describe work in progress Forecast when work will be completed

Feasibility Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp. 455-456)
Kinds of Reports: Feasibility Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) Conducted to examine whether a project or some equipment is feasible (suitable, or capable of being done) Purpose may be to: Compare solutions or proposals ( not yet started) Examine practicality of a possible action

Causal Analysis Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp. 455-456)
Kinds of Reports: Causal Analysis Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) Examines what caused a problem, a failure, or an incident Purpose may be to: Identify and eliminate possible causes Find the mostly likely cause and prove it

Kinds of Reports: Assessment Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) Conducted after a project has been completed, or after changes have been made A.k.a. evaluation or investigation report Purpose may be to: Evaluate effectiveness of changes that were made Compare solutions or proposals (already done)

Kinds of Reports: Recommendation Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) Offers a potential solution to a problem May be either: Solicited (Someone asked the writer for it) or Unsolicited (The writer decided to do it) Purpose may be to: Sell a solution to a problem, using facts to help the reader decide what to do

Kinds of Reports: Proposal Report (Lannon and Klepp, pp ) A proposal offers to do something, or recommends that something should be done. Purpose may be to: Improve conditions Authorize work on a project Present a product or a service (sales) Support a plan for doing a job
