12
‘To Listen’
13
Listening …. To be active listeners, individuals should:
Give the speaker full attention Encourage the speaker to keep talking Not break into conversation by sharing ‘war stories’ on their own experience Not give advice Listen as well for what is not said and for what is important to the speaker Ref: Coaching Leadership: Jan Robertson
14
How? Use the post-its to construct a model for a coaching conversation that will enable a person to get from where they are now to where they want to be.
15
Coaching methodologies
(in reality it is often less linear and more like this!) Topic Will Goal Options Reality 15
16
To maximise staff performance we need knowledge of …
Ourselves Others Communication processes
17
Self & Others ‘ For a leader to be successful, it is necessary to have good awareness of self. Only then can the leader begin to build an awareness of others.’
18
We have to master the art of good communication because …
“ Working with someone who shuts out feedback or responds with defensiveness and arguments is exhausting. We walk on eggshells and live in fear of pointless conflicts. Frank discussion fades and feedback goes unspoken, depriving the “receiver” of the chance to understand what’s gone wrong or fix it.”
