3
Bacteria and the Environment
Bacteria obtain energy from symbiotic relationships with other organisms. These relationships can be classified into three types: MUTUALISM COMMENSALISM PARASITISM
4
Mutualism: two individuals benefit each other Example: lichen is a mutualistic relationship between fungi and algae
5
Mutualistic Bacteria are often called SYMBIOTIC BACTERIA
Symbiotic bacteria are bacteria living in symbiosis with another organism or each other. For example, Zoamastogopera, found in the stomach of termites, enable them to digest cellulose. Symbiosis means “the living together of parasite and host".
6
Commensalism: one individual benefits and the other is not helped or harmed Example: barnacles on whales neither help nor harm the whales
7
Commensal Bacteria E. coli in human intestines are an example. Bacteria feeds on left over cellulose and other food products that our body cannot digest.
8
3) Parasitism: one individual feeds on a host organism Example: Tapeworms live in the digestive system of their hosts.
9
Parasitic Bacteria
10
Microorganisms There are many types of Bacteria
Some are helpful while others are harmful.
11
Helpful Bacteria Bacteria live on and in our bodies and keep us alive!
12
Bacteria Recyclers Many are saprophytes
Release digestive enzymes and break down material into nutrient molecules This provides the material in usable forms for other bacteria and organisms
13
Bacteria in Pollution Control
Used to clean up environmental toxins Toxins act as nutrients for bacteria Bacteria is currently being used to treat polluted sites
14
Bacteria as Probiotic Agents
These bacteria help maintain health and may have the potential to prevent disease
16
Bacteria in Industry Used to assist in productions
E.g. Streptococcus is used in dairy products, Psuedomonas used in the cleanup of sewage waste
17
Helpful Bacteria Bacteria are used to make cheese and yogurt!
Different types of bacteria cause different tastes!
18
Helpful Fungus Mold is a type of fungus.
A mold called penicillin is an antibiotic (medicine) we take to kill bad bacteria.
19
Bad bacteria Penicillin
20
Helpful Fungus Yeast is another type of fungus.
We use yeast when baking bread (releases CO2) and to make wine (creates ethanol).
21
Harmful Microorganisms
Some microorganisms make us very sick and destroy our food.
22
Harmful Bacteria Some types of bacteria are responsible for sicknesses such as pneumonia and food poisoning.
23
Harmful Bacteria Cause disease in their host (pathogenic)
Builds up toxins that travel though the body and cause symptoms (fever, chills). Ex. Staphylococcus can cause boils, food spoilage, blood infections and pneumonia.
24
Harmful Fungus Fungus can cause things such as: Mold on food
Athlete's Foot Dandruff
