1 Welcome to Meet the Teacher Night
Mrs. Schneiderhan Perry Elementary Center Kid President's Pep Talk to Teachers and Students! - YouTube

2 The ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: standing desks………..

3 Homework Homework will generally be given 4 nights a week.
Assignments will be a review of previously taught material. All homework is due the next day. Missed assignments will result in loss of recess to complete the homework. Since we only have one recess it is imperative that homework be completed nightly and returned to school the next day. Homework will include both math review and reading assignments due every Monday (more on that later)

4 Study Guides There will be tests and quizzes in Science and Social Studies since these subjects will be graded on report cards in 3rd grade. Before any test, a study guide will be distributed and the test will be announced in the assignment book and weekly parent letter. The study guide will include all needed information for tests. Often times, a Jeopardy game will be on my webpage that reviews necessary information for tests.

5 Assignment Books Please be sure to check these books on a daily basis.
If an assignment is listed, please sign or initial the book when the homework has been completed and checked. I check these books every morning for assignments and signatures This is a great place to write me a note if necessary

6 Schedule 2:40-3:25 p.m. each day Day A: Physical Education Day B: Art
Day C: Music Day D: Library Day E: Physical Education (first marking period only)

7 PSSA Testing All PA 3rd grade students will be required to take the PSSA tests in the spring. (ELA is April 3-7 and Math is April 24-28) We will begin preparing for state tests early in the school year. Each student has been assigned a Study Island account which can be accessed from home to help prepare for PSSA tests.

8 Attendance Work missed during the day will be sent home with another student or can be picked up in the office It is extremely important for students to be in school every day unless they are ill.

10 Reading: WONDERS Reading Wonders is the first and only reading program designed specifically for the Common Core State Standards for Reading/Language Art The series is published by McGraw-Hill and is Titled: Wonders The program provides unmatched support for: Building a strong reading foundation Accessing complex text Finding and using text evidence Engaging in collaborative conversations Writing to source

11 Reading homework Your child will be assigned nightly reading homework.
They will read two chapters of a book over the course of one week and then answer several multiple choice or written questions on that reading. Packets will always be due back on a Monday.

12 Spelling and Writing Spelling and writing are contained within the Wonders program. Spelling will occur on a six day lesson basis. The 6th day will be an assessment of the spelling words. There are 20 spelling words each week. Writing lessons occur each day.

13 Envision Math This Common Core Standards based math program is grouped into clusters to emphasize content connections between standards in a cluster. Envision math 2.0 fully embraces time-proven research principles for teaching mathematics with understanding. Each idea is connected to a previously learned idea. If you have a smartphone or tablet device and you go to the app store. Type in Bounce page and an app will appear that will allow you to photograph your child’s homework page and a short video will play to help them understand how to complete the homework.

14 Science, Social Studies, and PSSA preparation
Mrs. Heinly will teach social studies this year to all third grade. Topics include map skills and geography; landforms; and government. Mrs. Kelly will teach science. The students will learn about ecosystems, matter, the solar system, and inventions. PSSA preparation will be taught by me. This includes Study Island on computers and various skills necessary for testing in the spring.

15 AIMSWEB 3 times a year all third grade students will be given a reading fluency assessment that is recorded on the report card. The fall benchmark is 87 words per minute. The next benchmark will occur in January. Summer reading loss can profoundly effect the student performance from the end of second grade to the beginning of third and result in large losses. This is easily prevented by encouraging daily reading

16 SWEBS: School Wide Effective Behavior Support:

17 BOOK COVERS Students are required to cover their books. We have two textbooks that will need to be covered. Please be sure to get the extra large size

18 SUPPLIES- Students would benefit from having the following supplies.
Pencils (as many as possible) White board markers Clean sock (to use as eraser with white boards) A box of tissues to share with the class An extra crayon box is advisable

19 HAC (Home Access Center)
Each guardian will be given a password to access your child’s grades online from the Hamburg Area website. This is for all grades 3-5 You will be able to check on your child’s grades in each graded subject area.

20 Volunteers and Visitors
If you wish to volunteer in the classroom on a regular basis or if you wish to chaperone the field trip, state regulations require you to have PA clearances. This process is lengthy and can take anywhere from a few weeks to a month or longer. These clearances are provided free to all volunteers. Forms will be on the Hamburg Area website shortly for you to use ***If you were a volunteer last year who received clearances I have new information sheets for you to fill out

21 Birthdays! *****Due to numerous food allergies in third grade this year we respectfully request that birthday celebrations either include a food that has no allergens or bring a nonfood item to share. Some suggestions include pencils, erasers, jelly band bracelets, bouncy balls, crayons, pens, bubbles……etc.

22 Learning takes time *Every child learns at different rates.
*Please be patient with your child and support them with additional help whenever they are struggling. *What one child learns in one day it may take another child one month to learn. *Multiplication facts, spelling words, science concepts are great examples! 3 P’s: Patience, perseverance, praise

23 Contacting Me The easiest way to contact me is via school at There are times when the system is down so if I don’t respond please resend. If you have an emergency or change in transportation please call the office in the event that I don’t check before the end of the day
