1 Background Information for your Introduction
Brainstorm process:3rd Where it fits into the introduction paragraph: 2nd part Context is very important in the introduction paragraph. Without any context, the introduction will sound vague and incomplete. The background information gives you a launching point for your thesis. At the same time, the background information should be limited, but should include: The name of the book, author and a brief statement the characters involved in your thesis.

2 Example of background information (in relation to the Chrysalids)
Throughout John Wyndam’s story known as ‘The Chrysalids’ there are few characters who stand out as much as the father of main character, Joseph Strorm. As the main character David is constantly narrating his father’s exclusion.

3 Activity- Part 3 Write down 1-2 sentences of the background information you will need for your thesis. When finished, we will discuss these with the class.

4 The Hook of your Essay Brainstorm process: 4th
Where it fits into the introduction paragraph: 1st part The hook of your essay is a writing mechanism used to draw the attention of your reader. It is the opening line(s) of your essay. It is usually in the form of a bold statement, something to ‘shock’ the reader used to propel the reader’s interest. Usually, the hook has the reader asking ‘why?’ or ‘how?’ On the other hand, a question as a hook is considered weak and is not suggested, because a question encourages the reader to form their opinion and not to be persuaded by your opinion. Remember, this is a persuasive essay… without a good hook, the reader will lose interest quickly!

5 Example of a bad hook (in relation to the Chrysalids- The Question
Did you know that the community of Waknuk is critical of its citizens?

6 Example of a good hook (in relation to the Chrysalids)- The Statement
Be forewarned if you are heading to the community of Waknuk. It is strongly advised that anyone with imperfections would steer clear of the region.

7 Activity- Part 4 Now that you have ¾ of your introduction paragraph, your hook is the last piece of the puzzle. On a separate page, write an interesting hook for your introduction paragraph. DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME ON THIS PAGE 

8 Snowball Activity Once you are finished your hook, crumple your paper, and throw it at your friends. When I say ‘freeze’.. Find a paper (everyone should have one at the end) and you’re going to read it to the class. We will decide if it is a good hook/if it needs improving.
