1 10 Cornell Notes: Atoms and Elements GOALS
I can explain the difference between the mass number and the atomic number of an element. I can use the periodic table as a tool. I can explain the difference between a molecule, element and a compound. 10

2 Atoms and Elements Notes
What are atoms? Building blocks of ALL matter. What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space. (solid, liquid, gas) *Atoms for the most part want to be neutral.

3 O = O = H O , 0 = H O , NaCl H + H + 0 , O + O O + O
The smallest unit of an element Atom O = Element (molecule) Two or more atoms that are chemically joined together (can only contain one type of atom). 2 O + O H O , 0 = Molecule A basic substance that can’t be simplified. H + H + 0 , O + O H O , NaCl 2 A molecule that contains more than one type of element Compound

Element: Type of matter made of only one type of atom. C 6 12 Atomic Mass Number “The number of protons + neutrons in a nucleus”. Atomic Number The number of protons the atom has in its nucleus. Carbon Atomic Symbol
