1 Advanced Kagan Structures
Presented by: Mat Newcomb

2 Session Goals Understand basics of Kagan Structures
Learn variations of 3 basic Kagan Structures Understand applications of structures

3 Kagan Basics PIES LLL Connection Relationship Sphere:
Demonstrate team-building, problem-solving and social skills ELD Connection Exchanging information and ideas Interact with others in various forms Offer and support opinions

4 Kagan Basics Use Visuals to Introduce
Refer to a visual for the structure Use the correct name to build understanding and expectation Explain the academic (or nonacademic) task within the context of the structure

5 Kagan Basics Model and Monitor for Expectations
When introducing a structure for the first time, have a group model a round of the activity Eliminates most confusion Models correct and expected behaviors A great way to include positive aspects (Praise Gambits or Cheers)

6 #1 Traveling Heads Together: (Variation of Numbered Heads Together)
Learners number off. LF poses a problem and gives think time. Learners privately write their answers. Learners stand up and “put their heads together,” showing answers, discussing, and teaching each other. Learners sit down when everyone knows the answer or has something to share. LF calls a number. Learner with that number travels to a new table. Seated learners beckon for a learner to come. Learner shares answer to new team. Classmates applaud learners who responded.

7 Traveling Heads Together
Prompt: How do the Kagan Basics shared here support efficient and successful collaboration among learners?

8 Traveling Heads Together - Notes
Best with open-ended question Requires 100% learner participation Learners gain ideas from others Learners required to be ready to share out to a new group

9 #2 Simultaneous RoundTable: (Variation of Round Table)
LF assigns a task, topic, or question and provides think time. All four learners respond, simultaneously writing, drawing, problem solving, or building with manipulatives (Can use different colored pens) Learners place thumbs up when done with the task Learners pass papers or projects one person clockwise Learners continue adding to what was already completed

10 Simultaneous Round Table
Expanded form as decimal & fraction Word form /10 + 8/100 Three hundred fifty-nine and forty-eight hundredths 359.48 359.48 X 3 359.5 Triple Round to the tenth place

11 Simultaneous Round Table - Notes
Best with a task that can be represented in multiple ways Requires 100% learner participation Learners required to be familiar with all parts of the activity

12 #3 Simultaneous RallyTable: (Variation of Rally Table)
LF provides a task to which there are multiple possible answers and provides think time Learners each record an idea or answer on a separate sheet of paper, then switch papers to record each new idea or answer Learners place thumbs-up on table when ready to switch Learners coach each other as needed

13 Simultaneous Rally Table
Decimal Fraction Equivalent Fraction .25 25/100 1/4 1.8 1 8/10 1 4/5 0.1 1/10 10/100 2.4 2 4/10 2 2/5

14 Simultaneous Rally Table - Notes
Best with a task that can be represented in multiple ways Requires 100% learner participation Learners required to be familiar with all parts of the activity

15 Thank you! With the time we have left, discuss ways you could use these structures with your learners.
