1 Washington D.C.

2 Washington D.C. is not only the capital of the United States but also the best designed city in America.

3 Washington D.C. is situated in the district named after Christopher Columbus between the states Virginia and Maryland on the Potomac River.

4 The place for the capital was chosen by George Washington, the first US President. Washington wanted the capital city to be grand and impressive, and well planned.

5 Creating the capital from a swamp was not an easy task
Creating the capital from a swamp was not an easy task. Building went very slowly. Washington was first settled in 1790 and in 1800 it became the federal capital. George Washington invited Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a young French architect, engineer and artist, to design a plan of the new city.

6 L’Enfant designed Washington D. C. as a circle
L’Enfant designed Washington D.C. as a circle. In the centre of the circle were the Capitol building and the White House which were situated on natural hills.

7 The Capitol is the building where the US Congress meets
The Capitol is the building where the US Congress meets. This impressive building is 87.6 metres high and is seen from any part of Washington D.C.

8 The White House is the place where the President lives and works.

9 Today the White House has 6 floors, 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, 147 windows, 412 doors, 12 chimneys, 3 elevators and staircases. All American presidents, including George Bush, work in the Oval Office.

The tallest monument in the US capital is Washington Monument. It is 170 meters high and is made of granite covered with white marble.

12 If you want to go to the top, you can take the elevator or you can climb 898 steps. The Pencil, as Americans call the monument, is located in the center of the National Mall between the Capitol building and Lincoln Memorial .

13 The Lincoln Memorial is at the west end of the Mall, and is a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln.

14 This monument consists of two parts: the temple and the statue.
