1 Vincent Van Gogh Artist of the Week #9

2 Van Gogh 1853 – 1890 Van Gogh was born and raised in Holland.
He is considered the greatest Dutch artist after Rembrandt. He had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher, so he decided to study art. The works of his early Dutch period are very somber toned. – Most famous work from this period, The Potato Eaters, 1885.

3 Van Gogh In 1886 Van Gogh joined his brother Theo in Paris. Here he met other great artists such as Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin. Through their example, Van Gogh lightened his palette and shortened his brushstrokes. His style included short strokes of color with thick paint. – Created a TEXTURAL quality.

4 Van Gogh In 1888 he moved to Arles in the South of France.
Here his work became even brighter, as he was influenced by Impressionism and Japanese Woodblock Printing. Gauguin later joined Van Gogh in Arles, but they argued constantly. During one argument, and an epileptic fit, Van Gogh was driven to slash part of his earlobe.

5 Van Gogh Van Gogh committed himself to an asylum.
His paintings became even more striking, with rhythmic and dynamic compositions. Despite this help, Van Gogh passed away two months later at the age of 37. Starry Night, 1889

6 Van Gogh Only painted for 10 years of his life.
Produced nearly 1,000 paintings and a similar number of drawings. While he was alive, Van Gogh only sold one painting. He was little appreciated while he lived, but his paintings had an enormous influence on 20th-century art.
