3. Debbie’s Early Life She was born January 16, 1950 in Houston, Texas.
She began dancing at 3; her parents enrolled her in dance school at 5.
In 1960, she moved to Mexico with her family where she learned Spanish.

4. Her Struggles with Dance
When she was 12, she auditioned at the Houston Ballet School and was denied because of her skin color. At 16, she auditioned again at North Carolina School of Arts and was not accepted because her “ body was unsuited” for dance, she was told.

5. Her BREAKTHROUGH
Debbie Allen began her notoriety in She starred in the West Side Story which earned her a Tony Award.

6. FAME
1982 she won an Emmy Award for her choreography.

8. DEBBIE ALLEN TODAY
2001 she started her own, “ Debbie Allen School of Dance,” in Los Angeles
She was also honored with an honorary degree from North Carolina School of Arts that originally said her “body was unsuited.”
She married former NBA player Normean Nixon, and they have two children.
