Using the sewing machine
You must be able to: Set up the sewing machine Thread the sewing machine Fill the bobbin with thread Names the parts of the sewing machine.

Seams – how? A seam joins 2 pieces of fabric together.
There are 2 types of seam that we will complete; An open seam A closed seam An open seam takes longer to do and is therefore more expensive to produce. It is therefore less common. A Closed seam is quicker and easier to do and is found on most clothing

Seams – how? Take your two pieces of fabric
Match the two ends together Using a tape measure and pin together 1.5cm in from the edge. Next tack along the pinned line (removing the pins as you go). Sew along tacking stitches with sewing machine. 1.5cm Tacking Machining
6
Producing Seams You will be expected to produce fashion/textiles items to a high standard this includes how you finish of the seams. Your teacher will demonstrate each of the below seam finishing and you will have a turn at completing them. 1.5cm Seam Topstitch Edgestitch Overlocked seam Binding seam Ribbon seam Curved seam Curved topstitch Curved edgestitch

Closed Seam With the 2 edges together zigzag the fabrics together. Trim the edges down to the zigzag line. Open Seam Press open and flatten the seam. Next zigzag along each of the seam parts separately. Trim both sides down to the zigzag line.
