Gain an understanding of how Reading and maths is taught in the Early Years Gain strategies to support my child at home with reading and maths Gain understanding of the EYFS curriculum

3 Reading in EYFS Early Learning Goal (where my child needs to be by the end of Reception class) Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

4 Phonics Using phonics sounds is a way of decoding words by breaking them into sounds and blending them together

5 Phonics As a school we send home the phonic sounds the children have learnt that week. This needs to be practiced at school and at home as much as possible. Ask your child to help you spot letters in street signs or books, While you’re shopping ask your child to pick up an a-p-p-le (sound out the word for them to blend)

6 Developing comprehension
Retrieval questions; Finding information in the text or picture Interpret questions; Explain how the character might be feeling (using inference skills) Using background knowledge to answer What is going to happen next? (prediction skills)

7 Retrieval: How many leaves can you see? What is the animal? How many stars can you see? What is the title of the book? Interpret: What time of day is it? Why are the leaves falling off the tree? What do you think this book is going to be about? Why?

8 Developing fluency What is fluency? How to develop fluency?
Being able to read accurately, with pace, intonation (pitch) and expression. How to develop fluency? Read aloud to your child to provide an example of how fluent reading sounds. Give your child books with predictable vocabulary and repetition. Use books with audio books; have the child follow along in the print copy. Readingrockets.org

11 Maths in EYFS Early learning goal: numbers
Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
