8 PREPARATION: why pre-read?
IT HELPS YOU TO: Focus during lectures Listen more accurately and understand better Follow the lecturer more easily Concentrate and be more receptive Identify gaps in your understanding Identify questions you need to ask Be critical in class

9 PREPARATION: How to pre-read
THE OBSERVING PART: Read the study guide so you know what the lecture is about Browse through the chapter so you can get an idea of what the chapter is about. DO NOT READ THE ENTIRE CHAPTER Pay attention to headings, sub-headings, diagrams, tables, graphs and words in bold so that you know how the topics are linked and how the author has organised the material Read the summary – it should give you an overall view of the chapter

10 PREPARATION: How to pre-read
THE DOING PART: Find key sentences in each paragraph so that you have a general idea of what each paragraph is about Take note of the order of the headings Ask questions that you would like answered during the lecture so that you can follow the lecturer Make an outline so that your notes are more organised and you can follow the lecture more easily

When attending class do you: Arrive on time? Bring the correct materials (textbook, course hand-outs, notepad and pen)? Arrive ready to listen? Pre-read where possible?

When attending class do you: Listen with a purpose (what is your goal for the lecture)? Critically involve yourself; ask questions to the presenter or yourself? Pay attention/focus? Take notes?

How do I know what is important? Reviews given at beginning of class Repetition Material written on blackboard/ transparencies Summaries given at end of class Note what you don’t know so you can focus on it later during revision

esp. = especially between = btwn Think up as many symbols/abbreviations for existing words as possible Add them to your list Group = gp before = b4 DO NOT USE THESE ABBREVIATIONS IN YOUR TESTS/EXAMS/ASSIGNMENTS
