Last lesson we identified and described the causes of poor posture. We also developed our knowledge of sports injuries which are related to poor posture. How many causes and sports injuries can you remember? This lesson we will be looking at the physical and psychological benefits of a warm up including the key components of a warm up

Movements that involve a change of speed and direction
PE and Sport Faculty These can be done whilst stood still (static) e.g. quadriceps stretch or whilst on the move (dynamic) e.g. ‘open and close the gate’ Light physical activity e.g. jogging, walking or swimming. Lasts around 5-10 mins Movements that involve a change of speed and direction Rehearsing common movement patterns and skills which will be used in the activity e.g. dribbling skills in football Exercises that take the joints through their full range of movement e.g. arm swings, hip circles Match up the correct description to the correct component of the warm up. Physical benefits of a warm up
PE and Sport Faculty Physical benefits of a warm up Information race: Around the room you will find information on the 7 physical benefits of a warm up. You must collect this information and make detailed notes on it in your exercise book. Ensure that these are detailed as you will need to be able to explain these in an exam question! Physical benefits are those which are linked to our body including our organs, muscles and joints. They are not the ones linked to our brain

Psychological benefits of a warm up
PE and Sport Faculty Psychological benefits of a warm up Heighten or control arousal levels e.g. get in the zone or settle nerves Improve concentration / focus Increase motivation Opportunity for mental rehearsal Mental rehearsal is giving the athlete time to think about what they will be doing in the main activity e.g. a gymnast might think about how they need to perform their routine correctly after the warm up. They may use this time to think back to successful experiences of completing this routine and think about how they did this and what they need to do in order to complete it again successfully today. Task: Copy these into your exercise books. Think – pair – share: How does a warm up provide these psychological benefits?
