Poetry

What is Poetry? Poetry is written in stanzas (verses) that engage the reader through imagery, repetition, humor, rhyming, patterns, and rhythm. There are many different ways to write poetry.

Imagery My Snowman By Neal Levin My snowman had a lemon nose And lemons for his ears. His eyes were made of lemon slices, Hair of lemon spears. His teeth were candy lemon drops That smiled in the shade, But then the sun came out and turned him Into lemonade. The author uses language that allows the reader to create clear, detailed images in their minds as they read. Imagery is created through comparing objects or describing objects by using the five senses.

Narrative Narrative poems tell a story.
Sleeping Beauty Sleeping Beauty pricked her thumb, started feeling overcome. Probably she would have died as the witch had prophesied, but the fairies had her blessed so she just got beauty rest. For a hundred fifty years she missed balls and film premieres, till Prince Charming came along singing out a cheerful song. Kneeling down he kissed her cheek hoping that she'd wake and speak. Sleeping Beauty raised an arm reaching for the snooze alarm and her waking words were these: "Just need five more minutes please." --Kenn Nesbitt Narrative Narrative poems tell a story. The story may be fiction or non-fiction.

Free Verse Autumn by Fern Wind Blowing briskly Leaves fall From The Trees We rake Colored leaves In A Big Pile. And jump. FREE VERSE is a kind of poetry that has no real rhythm or pattern, so you can put words together in all sorts of ways. Free verse poetry allows the writer to be freely creative with their poem.

Humorous I Bought Our Cat a Jetpack I bought our cat a jetpack which I think she liked a lot. She strapped it on and instantly she took off like a shot. She zoomed around my bedroom then she blasted down the hall. She ricocheted off every piece of furniture and wall. Our dog freaked out and ran away. Our hamster squeaked and fled. I even saw my sister hiding underneath her bed. Our cat is so fired up I almost hate to break the news: She'll never catch our mouse; I bought him rocket powered shoes. --Kenn Nesbitt Authors add humor to their poetry to make the reader laugh and connect to the poem.
