What do all of these words have in common?
Rein Vein Obey Eight Weight They all make the /ay/ sound in them, BUT… Some are spelled with ei, some with ey and some with eigh!

2 minutes to think of as many words as you can that have they /ay/ sound in them, but spelled with ey, ei and eigh. FOR EXAMPLE! “eight” or “obey”

Is there a rule? Another week, another list of spellings without a rule! You’ll just have to try and remember which spelling of /ay/ fits with each word! For example, ‘rein’ uses ‘ei’, but ‘neighbour’ uses ‘eigh’. Be careful with which one you use!

The difference is that you must guess the letters in order before you can move on. When do you think the game will be hardest? When do you think it will be easiest?

Seriously Strange Spellings
This is a game to play in pairs! One player will pick a word from this week’s spelling list. They then write the word on their whiteboard, but with the letters in a mixed up order. Your partner then has to work out what the word is. If they get it, they win a point. If they don’t you do! However, if you have misspelled the word, they get a point. Look at your spelling list if you need help thinking of a word to use.

Adding –ed, –ing, –er and –est to a root word ending in –y with a consonant before it Last week we looked at adding –es to nouns and verbs ending in –y. Here’s the rule: The y is changed to i before –ed, –er and – est are added, but not before –ing as this would result in ii. Can you think of some examples? Think of the words we’ve been looking at over the past 2 weeks. Let’s try this rule in a few activities!
