1 Welcome to our Phonics workshop

2 Phonics Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. A Phoneme A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word.  How many phonemes can you hear in the word cat? cat c a t

3 A grapheme is a written symbol that represents a sound (phoneme).
A grapheme can be represented by 1, 2, 3 or 4 letters: n sun pan snap shop fish crash sh might high midnight igh eigh weight freight neigh

4 sight shell s igh t sh e ll Blending
This is when children say the sounds that make up a word and are able to merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is. This skill is vital in learning to read. sight shell s igh t sh e ll

5 Segmenting Children are also taught to segment
Segmenting Children are also taught to segment. This is the opposite of blending. Children are able to say a word and then break it up into the phonemes that make it up. This skill is vital in being able to spell/write words. ch o m p m u ch

6 Tricky Words Tricky words are those words which cannot be sounded out
correctly using phonic sounds. The only way these words can be read and spelt correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise.

7 Progression in phonics
By the end of Reception, children should be able to write one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes. In Year 1, they will begin to learn that sounds can be represented by different letters. The following words all contain the ai sound, but it is represented by different letters in each word: angel late train lay eight In Year 2 children learn spelling rules, such as adding suffixes to words (such as -ed, -ing, -ly, -ment and -ness). They will be taught rules on how to change root words when adding these suffixes Example: removing the 'e' from 'have' before adding 'ing'
