Media’s Role in Territorial Disputes
Providing Arena: “The media arena is often where that battle is conducted. The media itself becomes a rallying point for all the combatants – and every combatant aspires to control its own media.” Social Construction: “Conflicts are socially constructed and require a focus on ‘the social construction of state identities, alliances, military doctrines, and even particular weapons.’” Enlarging Conflict & Reproducing the nationalist identities : regional→global (by media construction); “inscribed in textbook descriptions of historical truths and values, recorded in regional maritime laws and policies, and reinforced through social media conversations for each of the countries involved.”

Theory: Framing Theory
The media focuses attention on certain events and then places them within a field of meaning. In essence, framing theory suggests that how something is presented to the audience (called “the frame”) influences the choices people make about how to process that information. Findings: 1. Comment Background: “International Norms” 2. Comment on China: “Hegemonism” 3. Coping Methods: “Joint Containment” 4. Japan’s Purpose: Sino-Japan Dispute, Constitutional Revision and Japan-US Alliance
10
Tentative research Question
What 1. What are the differences/similarities of editorials/opinions on territorial disputes from different Japanese mainstream newspapers? 2. What are the strategies that adopted by newspapers to comment on different territorial disputes (with China/South Korea/Russia)? How (less viable) How do these contents influence public opinions? How do these contents influence foreign polices? (if any)
11
Possible Theories Agenda setting theory:
"ability [of the news media] to influence the importance placed on the topics of the public agenda". Framing theory Positioning theory: about “how people use words (and discourse of all types) to locate themselves and others”.

What I should do next to add more region (Korea/Russia) into analysis
Based on previous work (Starting from Yomiuri) to know recent trend of such issues Expand the range (region/newspaper comparison?) to add more region (Korea/Russia) into analysis to make comparison with Asahi/Mainichi/Sankei/Nikei Improve research method/tool try to use more scientific, accurate method (eg. The R Programming Language) Read more about more applicable theories, previous studies, newspaper articles
