by Harvey Draisey

Independent company vs conglomerate
A independent company is a company that may only make one type of magazine. This means that this company targets a niche audience due to the lack of people it attracts to its readership. A conglomerate is a company that is owns different companies across a wide range of medias including TV, radio and magazines. A example of a conglomerate company is Bauer media group, these own Q, Kerrang and mojo to name only a few companies. This means that Bauer will have a larger readership due to the larger selection of music magazines which they offer.

Who may distribute my magazine?
The company that would distribute my magazine would be a conglomerate company. The company which I would want to sell my magazine is Bauer media group because they currently don’t sell a magazine which targets the alternative music genre audience. This means that this would help them to make a greater profit due to the increased audience. Also they would be able to advertise my product on a multi media scale which would also help to create a growing interest in my product.
4
Niche or mainstream? My music magazine would target a niche audience because the alternative music genre only has a small audience. If I had done a pop magazine then my magazine would be a mainstream magazine due to the large audience of people who would listen to this genre of music.

Bauer media Bauer media owns a large range in media platforms. They own a music magazines which include Mojo, Kerrang and Q. These magazines mostly target a audience who listen to rock music, this means that they cater for a niche audience. Kerrang is devoted to just rock music, this means that they target a niche audience because this isn’t the most popular genre of music. Q targets a wide audience because it includes popular types of music which means that it can target anyone. Mojo targets a classic rock audience. This means that this is a wide audience because this mainly targets 30+ men.

Time inc Time inc (formally known as IPC media) own a large range of magazines. There are music magazines such as ‘Uncut’ and ‘NME’. NME mainly targets audiences who listen to rock, alternative and indie music. This means it targets a wide audience, whereas, Uncut mainly targets audiences who listen to Americana, rock and alternative country. This means that this music magazine mainly targets a niche audience. This is because these genres of music aren’t very popular.
