BIGGEST PROBLEM You did not use your notes and hand-outs and you did not follow all of the detailed directions that were given to you. You must pay attention to details as you do your work. This was a detailed and complicated assignment.
2
MARKING NOTES Many of you did not meet the minimal length requirement. You needed to write a lot to fully answer the questions. Many of you simply did not provide a thorough and accurate answer to the question you chose. Many of you are leaving random spaces on you pages. Do you believe this makes your paper longer?!!! You must write about literature using the present tense. “Caesar has a lot of hubris” vs. “Caesar had a lot of hubris” etc.
3
MARKING NOTES Avoid contractions in formal writing assignments.
Some of you chose questions that you did not understand or that you were unable to answer. This makes no sense. Some of you simply did not answer the question you chose. Example: It is impossible to answer a question about Antony’s funeral speech without focusing verbal irony.
4
QUOTATION USE Many of you did not use the three steps for using quotations or did not re-read all the directions. Know when to precede the quotation with a comma vs. a colon. Excessively long quotations: It is often better to insert parts of the quotation and explain each point it makes. Some of you used very long quotations and ended up doing a poor job with step 3.
5
STEP 1 Context Be specific in setting up the situation and what is happening when the quotation is spoken. The reader should know who is speaking and what they are speaking about. You must give enough information so that the quotation makes sense where you insert it. The signal phrase must work with the quotation you are actually using. Never write a signal phrase like this: In the following quotation you will see how Antony uses verbal irony:
6
Step 3—The explanation Often, you must explain what the quotation means and then specifically point out how it supports and enhances your answer. BE SPECIFIC TO THE QUESTION YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO ANSWER!
7
Paragraph Review A one paragraph answer is one paragraph long!
Paragraphs have a topic sentence and a summary sentence.
8
Examples Act 2, scene 2—Caesar the fatalist Antony’s request of Brutus
9
DO-OVER OPTION You can do the same assignment again, and I will only count the higher mark. Use the exact same directions, but you wil be answering a question from The Learning Tree. CHOICES: Chapter 1-- #3 or #6 Chapter 2-- #2 or #6 DUE: ON OR BEFORE MARCH 8th.
10
Note The Learning Tree is a novel. Use MLA format.
Copy quotations as they appear in the text, which means you must show paragraph changes.
