Cold War in America The U.S. government was not only helping and protecting Western Europe from Communism, but also focused on keeping Communism out of the U.S. Sound familiar???

Cold War in America Senator Joseph McCarthy was responsible for the 2nd Red Scare: (McCarthyism) He made accusations and charged regular people with being Communists or holding Anti-American views with no evidence

Cold War in America In 1950 McCarthy created a list of 205 government employees he said were suspected Communists Panic and hysteria sets in once again as people are afraid of being labeled as a Communist or Communist supporter By 1954 he charges the Army with being Communists and his public support faded

Many people from Communist countries were not allowed into the U.S. (Eastern Europe, Asia, and especially the Soviet Union)

Cold War in America Americans not only feared Communism but they had to be ready to fight it The Soviet Union tests an Atomic Bomb in 1953 setting off panic in the United States The U.S. began mass producing nuclear weapons in preparation of a war with the Soviet Union (“Arms Race”)

Cold War in America Our war with the Soviets could not be contained on this planet 1957 the Soviets launch “Sputnik.” The first satellite to orbit the Earth The U.S. cannot be outdone so President Eisenhower creates N.A.S.A. and the U.S enters the Space Race: A race to get to space to use it to your advantage in the Cold War
