Technical Design Report preparation
J. Carwardine, N. Walker 23 November 2011 Much of the material was extracted from Nick’s presentation to GDE PAC (15 Nov, 2011)

Technical Volumes 2007 2011 2013* TDR Part I: R&D ~250 pages Deliverable 2 AD&I TDR Part II: Baseline Reference Report ~300 pages Deliverables 1,3 and 4 ILC Technical Progress Report (“interim report”) Technical Design Report Reference Design Report * end of 2012 – formal publication early 2013 Nick Walker - PAC, Prague

Technical Editorial Board
Chair: John Carwardine (ANL) Part I (R&D) editors Jim Kerby (FNAL) Hitoshi Hayano (KEK) Eckhard Elsen (DESY) Part II (Baseline) editors Nan Phinney (SLAC) Nobu Toge (KEK) Phil Burrows (OXU) PMs (Ross, Walker, Yamamoto) Tech. support Benno List (DESY) Maura Barone (FNAL)
4
Part I: Tech. Design Phase R&D
Comprehensive report on TDP R&D programmes where and how we spent the money Similar in scope to R&D sections in Interim Report more technically detailed more conclusive with respect to TD Phase R&D Goals Report R&D results should support baseline design (decisions) in Part II But scope can be broader, i.e. R&D on alternative concepts Implicitly will be indicative of the state-of-the-art in the key areas Authors should consider what to material should be added to supplement the content of the Interim Report
5
Part I (R&D): Provisional Outline
Introduction 10 pages Evolution of the design during the TD Phase 10 pages Superconducting RF Technology 95 pages Beam Test Facilities 50 pages Accelerator Systems R&D 65 pages CFS studies 10 pages Post-TDR R&D 10 pages Summary 5 pages
6
Part II: ILC Baseline Design Report
Relatively detailed description of the updated baseline design on which the cost estimate is based Similar level of detail to RDR But different structure – see later Stand-along document Relevant content from the RDR will have to be part of the content of the TDR (‘cut/paste and revise’) Supporting R&D results to be referenced to Part I Design details reference to Technical Design Documentation (TDD) in ILC-EDMS electronic version to contain hyperlinks
7
RDR vs TDR Part II RDR was divided into
Accelerator Systems (sources, DR, BDS etc.) Technical Groups (cryomodule, RF, magnets vacuum etc.) TDR Part II is Accelerator System orientated Each sub-system will cover its own technical systems Better suited to TD Phase project structure Acknowledge lack of RDR-like tech. groups (Possible exceptions: separate sections may be appropriate for global topics, eg Control System, Commissioning/Operations, etc)
8
Part II (ILC Baseline Design Report) Provisional outline
Introduction and overview 10 pages General parameters and layout 15 pages SCRF Main Linac 60 pages Polarised electron source 11 pages Positron source 22 pages Damping Rings 25 pages Ring to Main Linac (RTML) 21 pages Beam Delivery System & MDI 23 pages CFS and global systems 50 pages .. see next slide

Part II (ILC Baseline Design Report) Provisional outline (2)
TeV Energy and Luminosity Upgrade 20 pages integration of planned white paper Cost and Schedule 20 pages Project Implementation Planning >20 pages integration of stand-alone report (57 pages) Post-TDR Engineering 20 pages including technical risk assessment Conclusions 10 pages Nick Walker - PAC, Prague

Tentative Schedule Korea GDE meeting 24.04 – Parts I & II first drafts 16 weeks 25 weeks Executive Summary Companion outreach document US LC meeting (Arlington) – final Drafts preparation Very aggressive schedule! In parallel: cost estimation TDD for EDMS We like a challenge Nick Walker - PAC, Prague

Structuring milestones
GDE meetings provide natural milestone dates April (Korea): ‘first draft available’ October (US): ‘final draft available’ Baseline Technical Reviews Main Linac BTR (January) CFS BTR (March?) Others? How to prioritize / sequence the flow of work…? To help stagger the workload for authors with multiple writing assignments and for the editorial team Start by focusing on certain sections in each volume…? If so, where could we make the most rapid progress?
12
Couple of items regarding mechanics and workflow
Document management tools TDR document will almost certainly be put together using latex. Inevitably will have to support several formats for submissions We plan to use SVN for revision management. Supporting Technical Design Documentation will go immediately into the EDMS and will be cross-referenced Images and graphics A big headache for the Interim Report It will be necessary that authors follow the guidelines for image format, resolution, and cross-referencing in the text,… Details of the mechanics and workflow need to be developed
13
2011 Preparation Work Technical Editing Board kick-off meeting (2nd Dec – tentative) editing assignments and agreed-upon workflow Finalise detailed outline headings and scope estimated page count authors Request feedback from authors on proposed outline especially for schedule, but also content and organization Note: many authors have more than one writing assignment Consolidate/adjust writing schedule and provisional sequence Technical preparations: templates, workflow, workspaces,…
