Types of Compound Learning Outcomes:
I know two types of bonding present in compounds Success Criteria: I can determine the type of bonding present in a compound from the name.
2
Types of Compounds There are two types of compound:
Ionic Compounds - contains a metal and non-metal. The atoms in an ionic compound are held together by ionic bonds. Covalent Compounds - contains only non-metal elements. The atoms in a covalent compound are held together by covalent bonds
3
Sort the following compounds into ionic and covalent compounds
4
Ionic Compounds Covalent Compounds
Carbon hydride Copper sulphate Magnesium oxide Silicon oxide Carbon dioxide Silicon carbide Calcium carbonate Phosphorus iodide Lithium phosphate Sodium nitrate Carbon sulphide Aluminium oxide Sodium chloride Hydrogen oxide Zinc nitrate Nitrogen fluoride Carbon chloride Calcium fluoride Ionic Compounds Covalent Compounds
5
The smallest particle of a covalent compound is called a molecule.
A molecule contains two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds.
6
The smallest molecules contain only two atoms - these are called diatomic molecules.
The biggest molecules can contain hundreds or even thousands of atoms - DNA
