What is Humor? Humor is a literary tool that makes audience laugh, or that intends to induce amusement or laughter. Its purpose is to break the monotony, boredom and tedium, and make the audience’s nerves relaxed. The writer uses different techniques, tools, words and even full sentences in order to bring to light the new and funny sides of life. Humor is often found literature, theater, movies and advertising, where the major purpose is to make the readers and the audience happy.

Elements of Humor We will be looking at the following elements of humor: Irony Dramatic Irony Situational Irony Verbal Irony Hyperbole Exaggeration Dialogue Dialect

What is Irony?

Irony It’s funny! It’s unexpected. It sometimes creates suspense.
It’s like Cupid never falling in love.

The Big Picture! Irony Verbal Situational Dramatic

3 types of Irony Verbal irony is when an author says one thing and means something else. 2. Dramatic irony is when an audience perceives something that a character in the literature does not know. 3. Situational irony is a difference between what is expected and what happens

Verbal Irony The simplest kind of irony.
You use it everyday when you say one thing and really mean another. It is often similar to a sarcastic response. Examples: When you appear to be sick and someone asks you if you’re okay. You say “Of course!” But in the meantime you are vomiting and fainting. Your boyfriend shows up in ripped up jeans and a stained t-shirt. With a smirk, you say, "Oh! I see you dressed up for our date. We must be going to an elegant restaurant."

Situational Irony Occurs when a situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would be. Examples: The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out. The mayor’s wife gets caught stealing. The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking. The barber always needs a hair cut himself. You break a date with your girl friend so you can go to the ball game with the guys. When you go to the concession stand, you run into your date who is with another guy. You stay up all night studying for a test. When you go to class, you discover the test is not until the next day.

Dramatic Irony Occurs when the audience knows something that the characters in the story, on the screen, or on the stage do not know. It’s like the audience is more aware of what’s going on than the people in the production. This is used to engage the audience and keep them actively involved in the storyline.

Dramatic Irony Continued
In all of the Friday the 13th movies, we know Jason is in the woods. The characters do not. When they go out into the woods we are afraid for them because we know that they are in danger. We scream for them to run, we get excited when they fall, we cringe when we know that Jason is right behind the tree. When watching a talk show, the audience knows why a person has been brought on the show. However, the person sitting in a chair does not know that he is going to be reunited with a former friend. This adds to the suspense and humor of the show.

Review! Irony is a kind of a surprise. It is the difference between what is expected to happen, and what actually does happen. Irony is like a glitch, a twist, or a last minute switch in the game. It is an interruption of events that cause an unexpected outcome. There are three types of irony: Verbal, Situational, Dramatic

Which type of irony?

Applying Irony to Twilight
Bella wants to know how Edward tracked her to Port Angeles. He says, “Your scent.” She doesn’t know what to make of that, but the readers knows that he’s telling the truth. ________ Irony: Bella – “How long have you been 17?” Edward – “A while.” Bella learns Edward is a vampire. Instead of being frightened she is intrigued.

What is Hyperbole/Exaggeration?

Hyperbole An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. It is not used to mislead the reader, but to emphasize a point. Example: She’s said so on several million occasions.

What is Dialogue

Dialogue is the part of the narrative that indicates conversation between two or more characters

Why Use Dialogue? 1. By having your character speak, you can give the readers some insight into the character’s personality. 2. Having characters speak makes the story less boring-- helps bring the characters to life. 3. Having your characters speak can help you build suspense.

Rules for Written Dialogue
1. A character’s direct speech is always enclosed in quotation marks. 2. A character’s direct speech is always separated from any indirect speech by a comma or an end mark of some sort, with these punctuation marks always inside the quotation marks. 3. If a character delivers direct speech in multiple, uninterrupted sentences, only a single set of quotation marks is required. 4. Begin a new paragraph every time there is a change of speaker.

What is Dialect?

Dialect Dialect is language spoken by the people of a particular place, time or social group What are some examples of how people use different words now than they did several years ago? What are some examples of how people in the North use different words than people in the South?

Examples of Dialect Look at the following two ways someone might say “Hi” to a group of friends when they walk into a room. Which speaker is most likely from America? Which speaker is most likely from England? Well, hey there, mates. You catch the game on the tele this evening? Hey guys, what’s up? Did you watch the Chiefs game last night?

Examples of Dialect Hey, do you all want to go to dinner tonight?
Look at the following two ways someone might invite a group of friends to dinner. Which speaker is most likely from the Midwest? Which speaker is most likely from the South? Hey, do you all want to go to dinner tonight? Howdy there. Do y’all want to go grab some dinner?

Examples of Dialect Look at the following two passages. Which passage was most likely written recently? Which passage was probably written hundreds of years ago? It could have betokened nothing short of the anticipated execution of some noted culprit, on whom the sentence of a legal tribunal had but confirmed the verdict of public sentiment. From The Scarlet Letter The day was for the most part routine for Germany’s eighty-two million citizens. Train stations were buzzing, coffee shops busy, government offices going about their business. From The New York Times
