A Recap: What is WorldWideScience.org?
Progress since 2007 Global comprehensiveness Multilingual translations Multimedia search New members Relevance to scientific integrity New strategic directions
4
History and Collaboration
WorldWideScience.org concept emanated from Science.gov model (2006) Initial partnership between U.S. Department of Energy and the British Library (2007) Transition to multilateral governance (WorldWideScience Alliance) and ICSTI* sponsorship (2008) *International Council for Scientific and Technical Information
5
WorldWideScience.org searches the ‘deep web’
Where science is hundreds of times larger than the “surface web” Generally not searchable by major search engines Deep Web
6
Multilingual Translations
The world’s first “one to many” and “many to one” multilingual translations tool in science. Ten languages – Arabic, Chinese, German, English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian WorldWideScience.org partnering with Microsoft® Translator enables true multilingual functionality.

A Case Study for Enhanced Multimedia
Access to Multimedia-based Science & Technology A Case Study for Enhanced Multimedia Search & Retrieval Partnership between OSTI and Microsoft Research. Launched in February 2011; searches ~2,600 multimedia files. Utilizes Microsoft Research Audio Video Indexing System (MAVIS). Enables searching of digitized spoken content. Users can search for precise term within video and be directed to the exact point in the video where the term was spoken.

The intersection of science, ethics, and law is…
WWS.org’s Relevance to Scientific Integrity The intersection of science, ethics, and law is… Scientific Integrity Intellectual Honesty Accuracy Fairness Transparency Responsibility
10
WWS.org’s Relevance to Scientific Integrity
WWS’s 80+ databases are trusted, authoritative sources As national, or nationally-sanctioned databases, they have an implicit commitment to Scientific Integrity
11
WWS.org’s Relevance to Scientific Integrity
With its global search of 80+ databases, WWS… Distills and ranks the “best of the best” Serving as a “multiplier” for scientific integrity

The Next Frontier for WWS = “Big Data”
What’s next for WorldWideScience.org? The Next Frontier for WWS = “Big Data” How big is “big data”? Answer = 22,700,000 hits on Google But “big data” has two major problems It’s hard to find … and It’s hard to navigate … until now.
