What is advertising? What is it?
Advertising is the science of selling products to people. Advertisers try to persuade their target audience to purchase products. How does it work? They do this by making people feel like their lives will be better if they buy their products.

Advertising Think of any advertisement you know.
What is the advertiser trying to get you to buy? How will the product make your life better, according to the ad?

1. Slogans and captions A slogan is a repeated catchphrase associated with a product. Good slogans:

What is advertising? How does it work? What is a slogan? What is a caption?

Slogans and captions How do we know if they are effective?
Do they use buzz words to appeal to our emotions? (fresh, new, guaranteed etc.) Does it make you laugh? Does it talk directly to the target audience? Does it make a statement that can’t be contradicted? (the best built cars in the world). Does it suggest that your life will be better without the product?

Homework Bring in any advertisement from a newspaper or magazine.
Identify its slogan and caption. Say whether you think it is effective.

2. Visuals Visuals are the images we see in the advertisement. These can be photographs, colours, pictures or symbols.

Use a logo so we remember the brand Make the product seem glamorous Associate the product with someone famous – this is called endorsement Warn us that bad things will happen if we don’t buy it

2. Visuals. Have a look at page 195 and explain if the visuals are effective or not. (use the points we have written down to decide if they are effective). Start your answer like this: The visuals in the Adidas advertisement are very effective.
