Parent Letter: Dear Parents,
Reading is an integral part of our society—at home, at school, in the community, and in the workplace. One of our main goals as educators is to teach reading. Once students learn to read, they can read to learn—and thus, the door is opened to the world and its endless possibilities. As educators, we strive daily to promote and model the many benefits of reading. One of our current Edgerton Middle School goals is to increase student reading achievement. We have already implemented a daily reading time for all students and staff—an initiative that is proving to be both enjoyable and successful. We will also be implementing a voluntary, school-wide reading promotion program. This program is titled: iRead. All students will have an opportunity to form teams of no more than four across all grade levels. They will read approximately 25 books as a team. After three months of reading, meeting, and discussing books, students will compete against other teams and staff in an engaging question and answer format. This iRead Book Challenge reaches out to all learners and offers the opportunity for students to showcase their skills in a competition suited for them. Having been involved with similar reading promotion programs in the past, the excitement and energy generated regarding reading is extremely positive and contagious. Not only is the reading promotion program sure to be engaging, it will be fun and challenging as well. Students will explore foreign lands and different time periods, various themes and “on the edge” issues, and unique writing forms. In addition, participants will develop and/or refine important life skills such as teamwork, cooperation, goal setting, and meeting deadlines. The iRead Book Challenge competitions will take place during Advisory Times during the month of March and will be administered by EMS teachers. So, we hope all students will take some time to set down their iPads and pick up a good book and be part of the Edgerton Middle School iRead Book Challenge…..they won’t want to miss it! Sincerely, Ms. Fox Mrs. Fox
