1
Color Theory and the Color Wheel
2
What is Color Theory? Basically, it's having the knowledge to mix colors and put colors together in a way that is right for your art work. It is an Element of Art (parts of a work of art - color, value, line, shape, form, texture and space) that, along with the Principles of Design, help you create and talk about art.
3
What is a Color Wheel? The Color Wheel describes the relationships between colors. It is laid out so that any two PRIMARY COLORS (red, yellow, blue) are separated by the SECONDARY COLORS (orange, violet, and green).
4
Primary Colors Red Blue Yellow
The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. These colors cannot be mixed from or formed by combining any other colors, and they are the basis for making most other colors Red Blue Yellow
5
Examples: Red + Blue = Violet, Red + Yellow= Orange
Secondary Colors The secondary colors are the primary colors and violet, orange, and green. We get these colors from mixing the Primary Colors. Examples: Red + Blue = Violet, Red + Yellow= Orange
6
The tertiary color wheel contains the six colors of the secondary color wheel, plus the 6 tertiary colors - red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet. Tertiary Colors
7
Analogous Colors Three colors next to each other on the color wheel comprise an analogous color scheme. Here are three examples: red, orange, and yellow green, blue, and purple yellow, yellow-green, and green In an analogous color scheme, usually one color is dominant and the others secondary in importance. Three colors next to each other on the color wheel comprise an analogous color scheme. Here are three examples:

Complementary Colors Two colors on opposite sides of the colour wheel, which when placed next to each other make both appear brighter. The complementary color of a primary color (red, blue, and yellow) is the color you get by mixing the other two (red + blue = purple; blue + yellow = green; red + yellow = orange). So the complementary color for red is green, for blue it's orange, and for yellow it's purple.

Tint: A tint is a color that has been mixed with white.
Whats the differnece between tint and shade,? Tint: A tint is a color that has been mixed with white. Shade:A shade is created when black is added to a color. It is a darker variant of a color.
10
A colour scheme that involves different values of a single colour.
Monochromatic A colour scheme that involves different values of a single colour.
11
all three primaries together (plus some black or white)
Neutral Neutral colors or earth tones are not seen on most color wheels. Black, gray, whites are neutral. Browns, beiges and tans are sometimes neutral too. Neutral colors can be made by mixing: black and white complementary colors all three primaries together (plus some black or white)
