Why study Health Services Administration The Health Services Administration Program is offered by the College of Health Science and Public Health and is certified by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). This interdisciplinary program is designed for students interested in a variety of careers in the field of health services administration. Positions are with Health Care Delivery Systems, such as long term care facilities, health maintenance organizations, health insurance companies, home health agencies, mental health agencies, physician practices, health departments, various regulatory agencies and community-based agencies. Responsibilities carried out by health managers/administrators include: budgeting/financial management, planning, human resource management, data analysis, marketing, physician relations and administration. Internship The culmination of the student's experience in the program will be an internship in a health care setting. Students learn the day-to-day operation of a health care organization and will spend 20 hours per week working under direct supervision of the site instructor. To qualify for the internship, the student must have at least a 3.0 grade point average in HSAD classes plus permission from the Program Director. Students must have an identified track or minor. Specific competencies in the five main areas of health leadership must be addressed in the internship plan. These competencies are: communication and relationship management, leadership, knowledge of the healthcare environment, professionalism, and business skills and knowledge. Practicum for the Long Term Care Option is 1,000 hours.
