Why Do We Suffer Lord? 2 Timothy 2:7-13 Sunday Morning July 16, 2017
By Pastor Fee Soliven 2 Timothy 2:7-13 Sunday Morning July 16, 2017
4
2 Timothy 2:7-13 7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give you understanding in all things. 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 For which I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not bound.
5
10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
6
1 Peter 4:12-13 12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,
10
18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
11
Self-Induced
12
(Living Bible Translation)
Psalm 73:1-24 (Living Bible Translation) 1 How good God is to Israel-to those whose hearts are pure. 2 But as for me, I came so close to the edge of the cliff! My feet were slipping and I was almost gone. 3 For I was envious of the prosperity of the proud and wicked.
13
4 Yes, all through life their road is smooth. They grow sleek and fat
4 Yes, all through life their road is smooth! They grow sleek and fat. 5 They aren't always in trouble and plagued with problems like everyone else, 6 so their pride sparkles like a jeweled necklace, and their clothing is woven of cruelty! 7 These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for!
14
8 They scoff at God and threaten his people. How proudly they speak
8 They scoff at God and threaten his people. How proudly they speak! 9 They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut through the earth. 10 And so God's people are dismayed and confused and drink it all in. 11 "Does God realize what is going on?" they ask.
15
12 "Look at these men of arrogance; they never have to lift a finger-theirs is a life of ease; and all the time their riches multiply." 13 Have I been wasting my time? Why take the trouble to be pure? 14 All I get out of it is trouble and woe-every day and all day long!
16
15 If I had really said that, I would have been a traitor to your people. 16 Yet it is so hard to explain it-this prosperity of those who hate the Lord. 17 Then one day I went into God's sanctuary to meditate and thought about the future of these evil men. 18 What a slippery path they are on-suddenly God will send them sliding over the edge of the cliff and down to their destruction:
17
19 an instant end to all their happiness, an eternity of terror
19 an instant end to all their happiness, an eternity of terror. 20 Their present life is only a dream! They will awaken to the truth as one awakens from a dream of things that never really were! 21 When I saw this, what turmoil filled my heart! 22 I saw myself so stupid and so ignorant; I must seem like an animal to you, O God. 23 But even so, you love me! You are holding my right hand!
18
2. Reasons Of Sufferings Testing Of Faith
19
Romans 8:28 “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”
20
Philippians 3:10-11 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
21
Job 1:1-3 1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. 2 And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
22
3 Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East.
23
Job 1:1 “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil”
24
Job’s greatness came from his standing with God
25
Job 13:15 “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him”
26
Promoting Spiritual Growth
27
Romans 8:16-17 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
28
Purging from Hindrances
29
John 15:1-2 1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
30
Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
31
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
32
3. Results Of Sufferings Turns People to God
33
Teaches Submission
34
Glorifies God
35
Man’s Extremity is God’s Opportunity
36
Psalm 30:11-12 11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, 12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.
37
1 Peter 4:16-19 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
38
18 Now "If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?" 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
