Create Your Own Soul Bag
Tasks: Fill out five pieces of paper with one object, person, pet, idea, goals, etc. that make up your soul. When you finish writing your five “soul bits” get a paper bag. Pretend this bag represents your soul—the inner most being of who you are. Design and decorate the outside of your bag to represent your soul. Lastly, open the bag, stand it up on your desk, and put your five “soul bits” in your bag. You have 10 minutes to complete this task.

Journal #1 Why does the design you chose represent your soul? Why did you choose the items you did to be apart of your soul? Explain the value of the items in your bag.

Journal #2 Think about the five items you now have in your possession. You might have some in common and you might have the same item repeated. Consider why your classmates chose those items. Why do you think your classmates chose those items? Is your bag now more or less valuable? Are the five items you now posses more valuable than your original five? Why or why not?

Journal #3 What point do you think Zora Neale Hurston was trying to make with her “bag” analogy? Do you agree or disagree with her? Why or why not? What did you learn from Hurston’s essay?
