Media and communication in Zanzib ar
Background Zanzibar is the first country in Africa to introduce color television, in 1973 The first television service on mainland Tanzania was not introduced until some twenty years later The current TV station is called ZBC TV There are two terrestrial TV stations in Zanzibar, but public access other TV channels from their subscription fees if they wish to do so (eg Azam TV, DSTV, Star TV, Clouds, Coconut etc – all these could be available via top box decorder and subscription fees) That background shows that Zanzibaris are watching and using TV to advance their social, economic and educational activities; and information The common tag is ‘Elimu kwa Television’ – Education from TV
2
Why TV TV Scoop! Dissemination should be considered from the beginning of the research project. Planning how the research will be shared can help guide the research process and maintain focus on the project’s ultimate goal. And depending on the nature of the research, some information may be communicated before the entire project is completed. (E.g., news releases may be sent out at various stages of the project to generate interest and update the public on what’s happening.) Note: The primary objective of any communication which is part of dissemination is to bring about change: a change in public attitudes (perceptions) and behavior (or actions)
3
TV….. One of the most useful questions for researchers/research itself consider when initiating a project is, “Who will benefit from this knowledge” It is vital that the dissemination of information is both vertical and horizontal Vertical channels: refer to a two-way flow of information: researcher-media-public-government and vice versa
4
Why TV in Research Dissemination
TV is a great window in our society which helps us to know more information about the world events as well as give more entertainment to us which make us to forget about our tension. It’s a source of information TV gives both visual images and sound; thus creates huge impact to audience/listeners
5
Why TV TV is the best way to get the recent news and information, as well as we have lot of entertainment shows in TV. News contains both positive and negative things, whatever it is, we gain a lot of information from TV
6
TV + Dissemination… Different kind of channels are available in TV and we can enjoy various programs like sports, cartoon, fashion shows, educational information, animal stories and various things using various channels. Surely TV is a great window in our society which helps us to know more information about the world events as well as give more entertainment to us which make us to forget about our tension and worries and get relaxation and refreshment. TV can use graphic demonstration to justify the results, findings and convince the authenticity of the research
7
Why TV For research/researchers: TV is the best tool with immediate results/impact of the findings Broadcast media are powerful communication tool TV proved to be the most effective media in disseminating research findings; for the delivery of quick information (you see graphics/sound)
8
TV can disseminate, promotes the profile of the organization and strengthening its research capacity
Dissemination through TV provides added value to research projects, as the impact of research can be potentially wider than the original focus Dissemination through TV prevents knowledge becoming ‘sticky’ and effectively lost
9
Dissemination via TV are widely acknowledged and given priority by national and international development programmes as an essential means of maximising the impact of research on development Dissemination +TV is an intrinsic element of all good research practice, findings, whatever the discipline
11
Why TV TV is the most effective tool in communication for support of development, which is the outcome of research findings TV is an influential and appealing medium, capable to draw attention of too many viewers regardless of the literacy or illiteracy of its audience
12
Strategies TV spot TV talk show
Live or recorded programs/Live programs recommended Interview with researchers, and other panelists relevant to the findings Key stakeholders [eg key informants and baseline interviewees of the research]
13
Why TV… In comparison to radio, TV has a further privileged of ‘seeing’ rather than ‘listening’
14
TV…. As a general principle, optimum dissemination though TV can is achieved through using a wide variety pathways, from traditions and face to face communication methods, to the use of ICTs, in order to cover the range of user needs (example policy makers, practitioners and research community
15
Extra Notes….. Any research projects are often initiated with action and change in mind. That is, the knowledge generated is intended to be used towards specific ends– strengthening community programs, improving public policy, sharing vital information with community members/or targeted stakeholders. But the research is only useful if it can be accessed and understood. Creating a research dissemination plan involves a collaborative effort between research partners to identify the best ways to share knowledge for the project’s particular purpose and target audience. Researchers/involved partners can use this document to develop a dissemination plan that ensures that their research is distributed to and understood by those who need it most.
