Abstract expressionism is a post–World War II art movement. According to Rosenberg the canvas was "an arena in which to act". While abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning had long been outspoken in their view of a painting as an arena within which to come to terms with the act of creation, earlier critics sympathetic to their cause, like Clement Greenberg, focused on their works' "objectness." To Greenberg, it was the physicality of the paintings' clotted and oil-caked surfaces that was the key to understanding them as documents of the artists' existential struggle. It was somehow meant to encompass not only the work of painters who filled their canvases with fields of color and abstract forms, but also those who attacked their canvases with a vigorous gestural expressionism We go in search of our Dream 2007 Oil and acrylic on canvas © Fiona Rae

6 ‘Its really daunting coming in in the morning, and being faced with a blank canvas but I just think somehow I have to get the conversation going so I almost feel like if I can accidently brush against it and leave some kind of mark then that’s enough for me to pick up the baton and get going’
